Maria joined the firm in 2011 and is currently leading the Family law services. She has over 20 years of experience in all areas of family law, including separation, divorce, matrimonial finances and disputes around arrangements for children, where focus and sensitivity is essential.

She has particular expertise in dealing with child abduction cases and children cases with an international element. She is keen, where appropriate, to find solutions for clients which are negotiated and can enable the clients to move forward whilst maintaining a civilised relationship with their former partner.

Maria is often invited as a speaker at various events and a guest in numerous television shows to discuss about aspects of family law and legislative reforms. Being a very active person, Maria is a member of Parental Associations, political committees and community services. She also served as a Member of the Municipality Council of Nicosia, the Sewerage and Water Boards of Nicosia between 1991-2004 and of the Educational Service Commission of the Republic of Cyprus between 2004-2010.

Additionally, following her passion for public welfare, she regularly advises and assists with regulatory issues for environmental, health, educational and charitable clubs and associations.

Maria holds a Bachelor of Laws from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.

Maria qualified as an Advocate in 1991.

• Acting for a child abuse and abduction case on behalf of a mother who initiated proceedings against the father, a US citizen and resident, involving complex litigation on the interpretation of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child;

• Acting for a child abduction case on behalf of a father who initiated proceedings against the mother who abducted the child and relocated in her home town in China;

• Acting for a father seeking the issue of contact order due to parental alienation grounds due to the mother’s non compliance with the temporary child arrangement order;

• Acting on behalf of a mother in custody and contact order involving domestic violence case resulting in an arrangement for child – father contact only under supervision;

• Acting on behalf of a father seeking the amendment of a court order under which his child was placed under stop list in order to travel abroad;

• Acting on behalf of a mother who has joint custody of the children and their permanent residence seeking the variation of a contact order due to the father’s refusal to comply with the temporary contact order;

• Acting in a high-profile parental recognition case involving the issue of an order compelling DNA examination for a child born out of marriage who was already recognised by a third person as the child’s father;

• Settling a complex matrimonial property case on behalf of the spouse who was also the business partner of her husband and thus involved settling complex corporate and business affairs;

• Settling a complicated matrimonial property case after the commencement of the hearing and successfully claiming the contribution of the husband to the construction of the matrimonial home and not merely his financial contribution;

• Acting on behalf of the spouse in certiorari proceedings before the Supreme Court and before the Family Court of Appeal on issues related to matrimonial property and contributions in the family assets;

• Acting on behalf of a mother seeking contact orders for 4 minor children against a father who was granted custody and issued contact orders under supervision;

• Acting on behalf of a father seeking orders for contempt against the mother who was refusing contact with his child;

• Acting on behalf of a mother and achieving the issue of a court order placing the children under the “stop list” in order to prohibit their travel outside of Cyprus;

• Acting for Municipality authorities achieving the issue of interim order prohibiting the trespassing on the grounds of the municipality;
